Sometimes, we lose sight of what’s important in life. And then, in a moment, everything becomes crystal clear.
Jake, who loved to whittle, borrowed Pete’s knife as he fashioned a crude spear from a four-foot twig he found on the dirt path. He stumbled, rolling down a steep embankment to the creek, the knife flying from his hand and disappearing into the water. Pete didn’t relish the thought of losing his prize treasure, but the look of astonishment on Jake’s face as he slithered into the water caused uncontrollable laughter from both boys. They searched for what seemed like hours, but the knife was lost. It had been a gift to Pete from his grandfather. Jake felt bad, but Pete said it wasn’t any big deal.
They parted ways once on Bell Street, with Jake running ahead saying “goodbye” and that he would see Pete tomorrow at the party. That was the last time he’d ever see Jake again, at least alive. The gentle knock at his bedroom door and the sadness in his mother’s voice, “We should talk,” was just the beginning of the shroud of devastation that would cover his small world…
- From “Angels’ Footprints”
“Angels’ Footprints” is the first short story in the collection of the same name, and was Gary Yeagle’s inspiration for writing a series of uplifting and inspiring stories. After showing the story to a handful of friends and receiving plenty of encouraging feedback, he realized that in this complicated and stressful world, people are looking for meaning and depth.
From Gary Yeagle: “There is a need for ‘feel good’ stories, and each one of these stories gives the reader a specific lesson in life. It is my prayer that as you read the stories the Lord will bless you with each lesson, and that possibly something that I have written may change the way you think about life.” |
